Understanding The Purpose Of Women Clergy Robes

By Kathy Kaufman

There are many different kinds of religions out there. All of these have their own practices to ensure that the followers get the support they need. Services are performed so that everyone remains strong in their faith. These are usually facilitated by the priest or the pastor. In many denominations, these pastors wear women clergy robes.

The next time you go to church or to one of your services, observe what the pastor is wearing. You will notice that he is wearing such garments and that these garments vary according to the occasion. If you look at the different denominations, then you will also notice that the garments vary accordingly. These gowns are considered necessary for a number of reasons.

One reason is that this is a tradition that has been carried over from a long time ago. Early churches started this practice and it has never completely disappeared. Religious texts have many references to wearing these garments. This is probably the reason why people started to associate these garments with the religious leaders.

Another reason is that wearing one marks them as the leader and makes it official. When a person wears this garment, he is no longer a person but an individual chosen to lead the people according to their faiths. It helps differentiate them from the group so that you no longer see them as your friend, or your associate, and so on. They become the church leader.

The garments are a representation of his office. There are other formal clothes that can be worn. A suit and tea for example is equally formal but then these are also worn by the rest of the population. These unique garments marks him as a person of faith since these are worn nowhere else and by no one else.

The formality of these gowns also conveys the right message. Services are typically solemn and are not supposed to be casual. Sacraments must also be done in the right atmosphere so that it can be considered acceptable. Wearing such formal gowns sets the tone and helps to encourage the congregation to treat the occasion with reverence.

These garments serve to make every priest appear the same. These items have the same designs and are worn to the same occasions. What is more is that it serves to hide whatever clothes the priest is wearing. When they wore all the same thing, one priest will not be different from another. This ensures that services become occasions for worship and not for getting compliments.

Different denominations have different stands about these garments. There are those who have chosen to stop using these garments to symbolize their separation from one denomination. Some also think that these garments do not serve a purpose as this only differentiates the leader from the rest of the congregation.

Women clergy robes are worn for a variety of reasons. The most obvious reason for this is that this has always been the practice. These garments are also worn because they serve to identify who the priest is. Since these are formal, they contribute to the solemnity of the occasion. Some denominations support the wearing of these gowns while others do not.
